This is your year for real: 10 ways to make your 2020 New Year’s resolution finally stick

Grownup Gripe: New Year’s resolutions more often than not end up in smoke so why should I even waste my energy making one?

Are you ready to make some changes but don’t even know where to start?

It’s easier said then done that’s for sure and if you’ve been thinking about it for a long time, say years, what’s holding you back?

Could it be procrastination?

Research says procrastination is a widespread problem affecting at least 20% of the adult population and 50% of students.

Procrastination is a major problem leading to poor grades in school, lower salaries at work, a higher likelihood of being unemployed, increased stress, higher rates of both mental and physical health issues.

One of the primary reasons is self-doubt.

The problem is the longer you procrastinate the more likely you’ll NEVER get the job done. It really can be a vicious cycle.

Think about it. Have you wanted to change something up but can’t seem to get over the hurdles and finally make it a reality?

Good news, 2020 can finally be YOUR year!

No matter how monumental or minimal your New Year’s resolution is, the first thing you have to do is set your mind to it.

Are you really ready for that change?

Did something finally click or do you know deep down inside NOW is the time to do it?

The new year is a great time to make anything you want to happen.

With adrenaline still pumping from the holiday celebrations and heart’s content from spending time with the ones you love, there’s no better time than now.

But researchers say approximately 60% of us make New Year’s resolutions and only 8% ultimately succeed in achieving them.

If you’re anything like me when lines are drawn in a way in which I can’t have or do something, then I want it MORE.

When you’re eliminating something either a habit or an activity or something that makes you happy obviously it’s going to be hard.

Follow these ten steps and you’ll be on the road to one more under your belt. It’s not going to be easy but it can be easily done.

10 SURE-FIRE WAYS TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!

1. As mentioned earlier you gotta make up your mind. Are you ready to make the leap and put in the work to get it done?

We’ve been talking about it for a while but talking and doing are two different things. Are you finally done just blowing hot air?

Make up your mind finally. You need to trust yourself. Mark Twain said the secret of getting ahead is getting started.

2. Break down the play by play. How will you make this happen? It will be difficult to accomplish anything without a plan.

Something corporate uses for helping you is a SWOT analysis. It’s a way to outline your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in order to fulfill your goal.

Strengths-what do you already have going for you that’ll help you accomplish this?

Weaknesses-what is it holding you back?

Opportunity-whats in your corner? What are things you can leverage to make it happen?

Finally the threats. What or who is working against you? How is it hindering your goal?

Here’s what you do, review your SWOT and focus on your strengths and opportunities.

Eliminate threats and be aware of your weaknesses. Put plans in place to overcome those things when times get tough.

You’ve got this!

3. Be prepared for early opposition. What are your threats from the SWOT analysis?

Whatever obstacles are in your way you have to be prepared to overcome them. If you know what they are upfront, you’re able to stay as far away as possible from them.

For example, if you’re trying to stop drinking, don’t go to bars. If you want to lose weight, don’t buy the treats you like to snack on for your kids. Clean house. You get the picture.

Additionally if a person/people are your threats don’t worry about them. They’ll always be out there just remember hurt people hurt people. It’s their prob not yours.

Don’t let them impede your progress just because they are stuck in a rut. Just do you!

4. No matter what you need to overcome the first setback, you’re going to have many but it’s make it or break it from numero uno. Once you get past the first one you got this.

It’s a test. Will you pass? Be strong. You can.

Are you quitting smoking to live longer and be around for your kiddos? Will you forgo that liquor in order to eliminate bad choices?

The more you succeed, the better you’ll feel.

5. Stick to your guns! Don’t let self-doubt sabotage the progress you’ve made thus far.

Whatever it is you’re trying to work on think about the big picture. Keep your eyes on the prize and you’ll eventually succeed. Remind yourself why you’re doing this often.

6. The devil is in the details, don’t let them bring you down but as long as you’re prepared, you’re less likely to go off course.

When/if things go off the path, revisit where it went south and fine-tune the details that took you that way. Always have a plan.

If you’re ready for everything the little nuances won’t bring you down.

7. Keep your eyes on the prize! Think about what will life be like if you can do this.

Paint a mental picture of what it will look like and feel like if you can accomplish this goal.

How much better would your life be?

When things go off the rails or get super tough and you want to give up, keep that picture in mind-your reason for doing this.

8. Don’t forget teamwork makes the dream work. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

There are experts in every field, use them as a resource. Even though this is an individual challenge think about how many other people conquered this battle.

When things get tough these folks can share what got them through it and you can use their toolbox and work it into your own.

9. Be patient, good things happen to those who wait. If it was easy you would’ve done it already, right? Life’s a marathon, not a sprint, take it day by day and eventually, you’ll get to your goal if you keep it up.

As long as you don’t go too far off track you’ve got this. Even if you fall off the wagon for a second, get back on board. All that matters is how you finish.

10. Know your limits. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

As you fine-tune your actions to find whatever works for you, you’re on your way to the finish line. Watch out world!

If you’ve hit cruise control in your life, reevaluate things and make whatever it is you want to happen, happen. If you need even more help, check this out.

Come up with new goals and continue to be a work in progress. You don’t have to wait for the new year either. Once you overcome this resolution, onto the next!
