Flashback Food Fav: Chili Dog and a Root Beer Float

Grownup Gripe: If you’d like some comfort (and only have hot dogs left in your fridge) try these classics.

This year’s Memorial Day celebration is sure to be different than years past so bring back the dogs.

What’s a bbq without hot dogs, especially for little ones, but this recipe will even please old-timers.

Do you remember the restaurant chain A&W?

For 100 years they’ve been serving delicious hotdogs with a tangy Coney Island Secret Sauce.

There used to be an old A&W not far from my childhood home so this always bring me back.

Perfecting the recipe, you won’t find anything that tastes closer to the real thing than this number.

Here’s how to make it at home. I guarantee you’ll never dread getting stuck with a hot dog again.

Coney Island Secret Sauce

  • 1 pound ground chuck
  • One cup of water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of mustard
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dried, minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  • Squirts of Chalupa hot sauce, to taste

Brown beef over medium heat, breaking up into small pieces with a large whisk or potato masher.

Add remaining ingredients. Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally 30 minutes or so until it thickens up. Add salt/pepper to taste if needed.

Cook hotdogs anyway you prefer, either by microwave, boiling water or the BBQ grill.

Soften hotdog bun by heating in microwave for 10 seconds. Add hotdog and secret sauce. For added flavor add shredded cheddar and onions.

You will never eat a plain hotdog again. Freeze or refrigerate secret sauce leftovers for future use.

If you really want the A&W experience, pair with a cold and creamy root beer float. It’s like a PB&J.

They’re meant to be, try the duo out for yourself!

It’s a simple as two scoops of your favorite vanilla ice cream with root beer poured over the top.

If you want to make it a healthier, use diet root beer and low-fat ice cream. You’ll be amazed.
